Architaenioglossa
Apple Snails
The Architaenioglossa family contains nocturnal freshwater snails that are better known as 'apple snails'. They are considered to be an invasive species to North America and have become a major pest in rice patties of Asia and Australia. These snails are herbivores, eating only plant material, preferably dead and or rotting. The distinctive rounded shells of this family spiral upwards with a broad opening and appear perforated. The female can lay anywhere from 100-600 eggs in one brood and can have several broods in her lifetime of up to two years.
