These larvae were photographed on a winged sumac leaf in July 08 at the Seminole Nature Center at Longwood, Florida.
Research shows that they cover their bodies with fecal material as a means of protection from predators. It is called a "fecal shield."
Large back legs give them power to jump similar to a flea.
