The bracts surrounding each flower head are flannel-like in texture as are the greyish leaves. In the wild it grows in coastal New South Wales in Australia, mostly on well-drained sandy soils. It is popular in cultivation and apparently can easily be propagated from cuttings, but seed can be hard to germinate. In the wild new plants appear after a bush-fire. I recently acquired a plant which I shall plant into my garden in the autumn.
